Crystals, Back Pain and Mom

September 8, 2026

Today’s update.

I slept in a little bit because, once again, I had trouble sleeping last night. Apparently my brain has decided that nighttime is the perfect time to be wide awake and think about absolutely everything.

Eventually I got up and started moving, and somehow I ended up dragging a heavy drawer cabinet downstairs.

Was this smart?

Probably not.

Did I possibly tweak my back in the process?

Also probably yes.

But I’m okay.

Mostly.

The good news is that the office is looking pretty damn good now. Every day it looks a little more finished and a little less like a room that has been caught in the middle of six different projects at once. I’m finally getting to the point where I can walk in there and actually enjoy being in the space.

That feels huge.

I also got seven new crystal listings up in the shop today, which I’m very happy about. I’ve been working through inventory little by little, and today I spent a lot of time sorting through crystals.

Two kilograms of bumblebee jasper will definitely keep you occupied for a while.

And apparently it will also make you think about your mom.

Mom wasn’t really a crystal person.

She liked them, but she wasn’t the type to know the difference between every mineral I brought home or get excited about some rare inclusion the way I do.

But she did love to steal the pretty ones from me.

That was her thing.

I’d get something especially beautiful, and suddenly she’d decide it belonged to her.

The Caribbean calcite did the same thing to me today.

I was sorting through the towers and spheres and thinking about how she would have looked through the pile, found whichever one she thought was prettiest and quietly claimed it as her own.

Probably without asking.

Actually, definitely without asking.

And I would have let her.

That’s one of those little things I miss that I didn’t really think much about while she was here.

The stealing of my pretty shit.

I miss that.

Productive, But Not Too Productive

I also talked to my insurance adjuster today and finished up some of the long-term health insurance stuff I’ve been working on.

Very exciting adult activities over here.

Nothing says living life to the fullest like discussing future healthcare coverage with an insurance adjuster.

But it’s another thing handled.

And lately, handled is good enough.

I feel like today was productive without being completely overwhelming, which is probably where I need to stay.

Although moving a heavy cabinet downstairs by myself may suggest that I still haven’t fully embraced this whole pacing-myself concept.

We’re working on it.

Slowly.

Very slowly.

One More Batch?

Now I’m sitting here trying to decide whether I should go to bed or sort one more batch of crystals.

This is apparently what my life has become.

Normal people ask themselves whether they should watch one more episode.

I ask whether I should sort another kilogram of rocks before midnight.

Honestly, it could be worse.

Part of me wants to keep going because once I get into sorting mode, I really enjoy it. There’s something calming about going through a batch piece by piece, looking at all the patterns, colors and little differences between them.

And part of me knows my back is already giving me a subtle warning that maybe tonight should end here.

That’s probably the smarter part.

Will I listen to her?

We shall see.

The crystals aren’t going anywhere.

The listings will still be there tomorrow.

And apparently my mom can no longer sneak into the pile and steal the prettiest one, which is still something my brain hasn’t figured out how to accept.

Maybe that’s why sorting them felt a little heavier today.

But it also made me smile.

I could picture her doing it.

And tonight, I’ll take the smile.

So maybe that’s enough for today.

Seven listings.

One moved cabinet.

One possibly annoyed back.

One insurance task finished.

And a whole lot of memories hiding inside some really pretty rocks.

Not a bad day.

Now the real question is…

Do I go to bed?

Or do I sort one more batch?

I already know which answer my back is voting for.
